I would like to know the title of a film loosly based on the pied piper of hamlyn.?

It is a old film probably 40's or 50's filmed in black and white. The
star (I originally thought was Peter O'Toole, I was wrong) travels
around war torn Europe while sick and needy children follow him on his
journey. I used to watch this as a child with my dad and would love to
see it again.
